Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

St Croix Valley CSA - an Amish Cooperative

WhaT IS A CSA?

Community Supported Agriculture allows a farmer to receive an upfront investment for a summer’s work and harvest. Knowing how many “members” they can support allows the farmer to plant enough - but not too much - and to know that they have a place for all of the vegetables and fruits they’re growing.

Butter Bakery Café first signed up with the Big River Farm of Wilder Forest at Marine on St. Croix in 2006.  We hosted Big River until they closed their CSA in 2023 to focus on their mission of education of immigrant farmers. You can still find them at the Kingfield Farmers Market.

Over the years we have hosted several others farms - and have been members ourselves to support their work and enjoy the fruits of their labor!

currently we host the St. Croix Valley Co-Op (an Amish cooperative), Whetstone Farm of Clear Lake WI, and The Hmong American Farmers Association CSAs

BE EFFICIENT and SUPPORT BUTTER with a BREAD SHARE ALSO

We offer a weekly BREAD SHARE that matches up with the vegetable drops so that you can have a freshly baked loaf of bread or bag of rolls to pick up when you gather your veggie share!

Check out our CSB page on the website for more info.

We keep a good eye on your box when it arrives - and we’re willing to store your box in our coolers if you are running late and can’t pick it up until the next day. Just give us a call.

If you’re out of town or just OVERLOADED with veggies - we’re happy to support a donation to the Nicollet Square Housing residents - we can help you share your share!

Wondering what to make with your box - check out our selection of soups and salads and quiche combos to see how we used our very own CSA boxes at the cafe!
